“Come on Grandma, let’s go,” said Cecilia and both hurried out the back door and to the car. It’s Saturday morning and the farmers have been ready for their customers since early morning. Cecilia wanted to see what her Grandma buys at the market as she goes weekly.

“Phew, finally we have a car space as each week it’s getting harder to find one.”

“Isn’t that a good thing Grandma? To go to the Famers Market? My teacher says it’s better to buy local where we can and get to know the farmers.”

They both grab the bags off the back seat along with the shopping jeep and trot along the narrow foot path past the century old homes. Cecilia poking her nose in each rose bush and brushing the flowers that topple the fences. The morning sun starts to make an appearance the minute they enter the school grounds of tents where the local stall holders have set for the day until they have sold out. The fresh aroma of bread waffles the air as Cecilia and Grandma hold their noses high.

“Hello George, the usual please. I have my granddaughter with me today.”

“Oh, I see she’s similar age to my granddaughter here too.” George winked at Grandma. “This is Molly and she’s helping me out today. And maybe some bonus pocket money too.” George looked down at Molly with a grin.

“Wow, look at all those vegetables laid out on the table. And that’s an awful lot of celery there too Grandma.”

“Yes, and it will all be gone before the days out, many buy in big numbers and clean me out first,” said George. George handed Grandma some bags with 4 large celery bunches and a bag of mixed cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, bok choy, carrots, coriander, capsicum, and an overflowing bunch of spinach.

Grandma put most of her shopping jeep while Cecilia manages to grab a small bag with two celery stalks. Grandma motions with her arm to move along to another stall and then stopped to buy some honey and strawberries. Cecilia is handed a paddle pop with a taste of some honey on it.

“Yum.” She goes. “I love honey on my crumpets.”

“I love eating it raw, said Grandma.  “It’s good for you. Medical Medium says the bugs hate raw honey and it’s medicinal for fighting a cold. A spoonful a day does wonders for your Grandma’s health.”

The celery is drooping closer to the ground as Cecilia’s arm got tried. So Grandma pulls the shopping jeep and her bags up alongside a bench seat.

“Have a seat dear for a minute or two as you know Grandma loves to observe people.”

“They do look different, don’t they Grandma. Some are hippy like and could live life without shoes and not a care in the world.”

“Times are changing as we go back to the old days in some ways, but more knowledgeable and doing things better today.”

Cecilia sat quietly watching the dogs on leads with their master’s and young children in prams too young to know what’s going on. The air was electrifying that all the children had an extra step in their step at these markets.

Grandma loved going weekly and topped up her supplies at the local greengrocer when she ran out. Cecilia’s blood was now pumping as she was thinking of her class on Monday and words ran through her head as she was repeating the words of what she will share with her class on her day at the farmers market.  Cecilia and Grandma got up and headed for the car. Cecilia’s body was buzzing with excitement as she would like to go to the farmers market more often. Cecilia helped her Grandma unpack and wash all the vegetables to be stored away for the week. Then Cecilia walked to the living room and crawl up onto the couch and rested her head on the cushion. It was a big morning for a young girl.
