In 2012 there was a book released called ‘Wakool Crossing: A Modern Day Investigation into the Mysterious Death of a Young Woman in 1916’ by Mike Richards.

Dad received a copy in the mail and then passed it around. The thin yellowish book didn’t take long to read.

The Wakool Crossing Mystery was seemed like an ordinary book.

But it wasn’t.

The mystery of the story involved my own family.

Some how this story never emerged. Even during my 11 years of researching the family history.

Mike Richards the books author set out on a search to find the truth about his great Aunt who had disappeared from a local dance and her body was found a week later in the river. Apparently the last person to see her alive was my own great grandfather Edward Harper (known as Eddie).

Surprisingly when I received the book in the mail, I didn’t hesitate. Then one night while sitting in my chair, I sensed a presence with me while reading. Then at one stage I saw a face of a person who appeared to be looking up at me. It was the first time I had that kind of experience.

But the most remarkable part of the book was when I got to the part where the mother of the missing girl had seen a gypsy and I tingled on these words.

‘You may think it was a man, but in fact it was a woman.’

My golly I had just had confirmation with my tingling/goosebumps that it couldn’t have been my great grandfather. Everyone loved my Pop Harper as dad called him and I remembered visiting him as a very young child.
After the tragedy he met my great grandmother the following year.

So who was the person with me while I read the book?

Was it Pop Harper?

My guess it wasn’t.

While the mystery may never be solved due to the era and documentation at the time. The area and families would have lived with the secrets and now that the people have left this Earth.

We may never know.

I trust my body.

And believe it was a woman.

Not because of my great grandfather.

But the feeling and sensations I got reading that passage from the gypsy.
